SIGMA visits Lossiemouth Library
SIGMA Chairman, Stan Barber gave a talk on the basic workings of the solar system to an enthusiastic group of youngsters at the Lossiemouth library on 12th July 2010. The event was timed to coincide with their summer reading programme, which had a space theme for 2010.
The children were taught how ancient astronomers thought everything revolved around the Earth but how a change in knowledge and understanding taught them that Earth, in fact, revolved around the Sun! Something that seems quite obvious with today’s scientific knowledge. The children then made their own planispheres to take away and use when the dark nights returned.
Here are some photographs taken on the day and are used by kind permission of all the parents present.
